Roadtrip 2017 dag 12

31 augustus 2017 - Caspe, Spanje

We opened our eyes with a thought that it's our last day of fishing. This is it, the last chance to catch the huge beasts of Ebro! We prepared, worried about it being the same as the last few days, still a bit hopeful. I was ready extra early to go down to a bar of our hotel for a cup of coffee. Marcel, who isn't into coffee as much as I am, stayed in the room for more relaxed preparing. I got a big cup of coffee and sat around elderly Spanish people, who were happily chatting with each other. One lady sat down next to me. We couldn't understand each other in words, so we talked in signs, having so much fun with it! The sphere in the bar was so nice and cozy....one hardly translatable Dutch word describes it very good - gezellig! :) It didn't take long for Marcel to come down, and I was done with my coffee, so I followed him to the motorcycle and we went to the shore of Ebro. There we met with Jos who was preparing our boat already. We jumped in it and soon were preparing our fishing spot. When it was nice and ready, our waiting began again. We saw more activity from the nature around, the weather was cool and the sky clear, so I felt really hopeful. And soon it began - one bite, another! The fish were really trying out the bait this time, not really picking it up, but it was so much better than the days before! Happy about it, we passionately talked with each other. Suddenly, another strange voice interrupted our conversation - I also heard some little stones falling behind me, so I turned around startled - there was a man, all sweaty and tired, greeting us. That was a fisherman from another camp. We had a little conversation, and Jos brought him back with his boat to the other shore. When he was back again, we had a few more bites on the rods already. When we sat down to talk, we got another bite, and it stayed! Marcel jumped up and picked it up. The fish fought back. I grabbed the camera, Jos - the rope of the boat, but as soon as we climbed in, the fish got loose. It was probably hooked on very lightly. So we prepared the rod again and returned to talking, happy and hopeful about the fish being active. It didn't take too long for another bells to ring - that rod bended all the way down! I was just too late to jump in the boat together with Jos and Marcel, so I stayed on the shore, watching the fight and making some pictures. And oh boy, how long that fight had taken! The fish really wasn't going to give up, but so weren't Marcel and Jos. And soon they won - I saw Marcel pulling it up to the surface, and Jos - pulling it in the boat. Soon they brought the great catfish back to the shore. And I was constantly making pictures! They measured the fish - 1,83 meters! Tiny bit bigger than Marcel himself! Than a photoshoot followed - me and Jos were jumping around proud Marcel and his huge catfish like paparazzis. Finally Marcel went back to the water and let the beautiful giant go - it was a slow goodbye, with the fish taking it's time to slide out of his arms. After a good washing up from all the slime, Marcel returned to his seat with a big smile - his catfish top 10 got renewed like he had wished for! And now it was my turn again....ring ring ring! There went the bells, and that wasn't just a bite! Surprised, I grabbed the rod, and the fish was fighting back. Now Marcel grabbed the camera, and all three of us went into the boat. I could fight the fish on my own for a while, until my wrists got tired and I needed a bit support from Marcel. Quite soon the fighter came to the surface - a smaller catfish, but with incredibly beautiful colors!
We took it back to the shore and measured it - 0,87 meters! Not a monster, but also doesn't have to be while being so beautiful! After a fun photoshoot, now Jos together with Marcel being paparazzis, I let my catfish go, watching it swim away, wiggling it's tail like saying goodbye. Happy and slimy, we went back to waiting. After a while, Marcel caught another fish - the smallest catfish he's ever seen! So, his smallest record :) We didn't even measured it, just took some photos and released it back from the boat. The rest of the day went by with my excitement, of it being my turn, but the fish decided to keep us excited untill next time. We cleant up our camp after waiting extra long already. Then we said untill next times to Jos, thanking him, for a nice time and fishing together, and drove back to Caspe. After dining and showers, we're preparing for the night and further travelling. Tomorrow we move on, towards our home in the Netherlands. Our motorcycle probably has missed us!..
