Roadtrip 2019 Italy, day 13

7 augustus 2019 - Nicolosi, Italië

Went to Etna: 9:40
Kms made: 39,4
Kms made in total: 3854,8
Weather: hot and sunny, of course. Cool and windy high up in Etna.

After a lovely Italian breakfast with croissants and fruit we prepared and jumped on the bike. Yes, yesterday I wrote that our adventure continues here, and it kind of did, only we needed to climb for it....up to Etna! We drove up for about half an hour, where we reached the site to begin our excursion. We checked in and went to the cable cars which would take us up higher. Those were no fun for me as I have fear of heights, but we were at our destination soon enough. From there we climbed into a huge jeep-car that brought us the highest that we were supposed to get. The guide guided us around the craters, and Marcel guided me - because ash and fumes can damage contact-lenses, I had to leave mine at our B&B. I did see enough even without them - the craters were enormous! It was so amazing to be there, up an active volcano, with all the villages and the sea visible down there and the smoke-spitting top of Etna being right beside us. After our fascinating tour we went down with the jeep, had lunch, then used the cable car again, explored one more crater which was smaller and returned down to our cozy stay. There we took it easy, explored Nicolosi a bit, then packed slowly to be ready for tomorrow and went into the town again to have some food and enjoy a cozy Italian evening. Tomorrow a long ride awaits - we return to the main land!
